New Delhi, January 23, 2020:

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered the Myanmar government to take emergency measures to protect Rohingya Muslims against the violence and preserve evidence of possible genocide.

The ICJ has opined that the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar are in vulnerable situation. Reports quoted ICJ President Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf saying that it “is of the opinion that the Rohingya in Myanmar remain extremely vulnerable”.

He said that the provisional measures were necessary to protect the group, adding that Myanmar had not presented concrete measures aimed at ensuring “the right of the Rohingya to exist as a protected group” before the ICJ.

The court has ordered the Myanmar government to report on the measures taken to comply with its order within four months initially. It has also sought for reports on the same every six months.

Myanmar on Thursday lost its legal challenge against the ICJ. It has also lost its case against Gambia, which had filed a lawsuit in the ICJ accusing Myanmar of genocide against the Rohingya Muslims.

It may be mentioned here that over 730,000 Rohingya Muslims had fled the state to neighboring India and Bangladesh. The crackdown carried out by the Myanmar government was condemned internationally. Reports of gruesome rapes and murders had surfaced during the week-long crackdown.
