New York, October 6, 2019:

A United Nations report circulated to the UN General Assembly on Friday has said that it is not safe for the Rohingyas to return to Myanmar as the country has failed to dismantle its systematic persecution of Rohingyas.

The UN Independent investigator on Myanmar, Yangshee Lee, in her report said that the living condition of the Rohingyas in Northern Rakhine state is "dreadful".

It says that the Myanmar government's continuing conflict with the guerilla group 'Arakan Army', seeking autonomy for Rakhine, is affecting the lives of Rohingyas in Myanmar adversely.

In her report, Lee urged UN member states to impose sanctions on companies owned by the Myanmar military as they are responsible for the sufferings of Rohingyas since 2011.

The Rohingya people are a stateless Indo-Aryan ethnic group who reside in Rakhine State, Myanmar. There were an estimated 1 million Rohingya living in Myanmar before the 2016–17 crisis. By December 2017, an estimated 625,000 refugees from Rakhine had crossed the border into Bangladesh since August 2017.
