NAYPYIDAW: Myanmar State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has warned of a COVID-19 spread could increase following massive gatherings across the country celebrating her party’s election victory.

Since polls closed on Nov. 8, the National League for Democracy (NLD) supporters have gathered in great number to celebrate the victory in major cities.

Concerned health officials have said that shouting, singing and cheering in crowds could speed up the spread of coronavirus.

It needs mention here that 3 NLD supporters tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 9 while being treated in Yangon General Hospital after being injured in a fight.

According to the Ministry of Health and Sports, about 200 of the 4,000 people who traveled to vote have tested positive without displaying symptoms.

In a televised speech on Monday evening, Kyi said the infection rate of the dreaded virus is bound to rise in the country after the election.

The infection rates have increased slightly in Bago, Ayeyarwady and Mandalay regions along with Yangon, the country’s COVID-19 hotspot, Kyi said.

“That is why I want you all to be vigilant: we can never be too careful.” she added.

Meanwhile, the health ministry reminded citizens that gatherings of more than 29 people were banned.

The ban on gatherings in Myanmar was introduced on Aug. 16 to curb the spread of coronavirus.

On Monday, Yangon reported 53,858 cases, followed by Bago Region with 3,659 cases, Rakhine State with 3,304 cases, Mandalay Region with 3,304 cases and Ayeyarwady Region with 1,961 cases.
