Kohima, February 24, 2020:

Seeking the Prime Minister's "personal commitment" to solve the insurgency problem and the question of "sovereignty", the Naga Intellectual Forum on February 23 wrote to Narendra Modi on behalf of all "concerned Nagas."

The Forum recalled that as early as 10 January 1929, the Naga Club had submitted a memorandum to the Simon Commission to "leave us alone to determine by ourselves as in ancient times."

Consequently, the Intellectual Forum informed, the Indian Constitutional reforms of 1935 Act accepted to classify Naga-inhabited areas as "excluded areas" and placed it as the Naga Hills district during the then British colonial regime. "The Naga affairs was always treated as a subject matter under the Minister of External Affaors, Government of India, 1972.

The Intellectual Forum also reminded the PM that numerous CSOs like the Naga Hoho, Naga Students' Federation (NSF), Naga Mothers' Association, Naga People's Movement for Human Rights, All Naga Students' Association Manipur, churches and various civil organizations have lost count of submitting representations to the GOI for a "lasting, honorable and acceptable solution".

Lamenting that the Nagas are facing an "existential threat" due to Acts such as the AFSPA, Disturbed Area Act and National Security Act, the Intellectual Forum batted for "peaceful coexistence" through "shared sovereignty" by translating the 'Framework Agreement'.

The communique that was undersigned by Worthington Mahum (Convernor) further implored the PM to devote his "personal time" to settle the protracted peace process. "Therefore, we implore upon your noble self in person to devote your personal time besides relying on just bureaucratic feedbacks and inputs to settle the peace talk once and for all in sincere earnestness befitting your leadership and commitment", the Forum added.
