Naga SAZ chief among detained NLD leaders in Myanmar coup

Junta seized power after detaining democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and president U Win Myint on Monday

DIMAPUR: Naga Self-Administered Zone (SAZ) in Myanmar chairman U Kay Saing has also been detained among some 34 National League for Democracy (NLD) leaders in Myanmar military coup in the wee hours of Monday.

Confirmed that Saing was among those detained, informed sources said those detained include 34 leaders of the NLD.  An official confirmation was still awaited as internet and phone services are restricted in the country.

A little over half a decade after democratic transition started in Myanmar, the junta seized power after detaining democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and president U Win Myint on Monday. Assuming charge, chief of the army Senior General Min Aung Hlaing declared a one-year state of emergency.

The military coup d’etat is stated to be fallout of tensions between the armed forces and the government after the army-backed opposition’s loss in the parliamentary elections in November 2020. The military has alleged electoral fraud. The electoral commission had, however, dismissed the allegation.
