Kohima, February 5, 2020:

The Naga Students' Federation (NSF), the apex students' organization in the State, has appealed the Government of Nagaland to adopt a resolution against the controversial legislation in the upcoming 5th session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, due on commence on February 7 next.

An official letter addressed to the Chief Minister of Nagaland issued by NSF President, Ninoto Awomi and General Secretary, Liremo R. Kikon on Tuesday stated that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is set to open the floodgate for illegal immigrants to infiltrate into the land, "altering the demographic and linguistic uniqueness of the Northeast region in general and Nagaland in particular."

The NSF also reiterated that the CAA is "anti-secular, anti-minority, anti-indigenous" and is "violative of the basic ethos of the constitution".

The NSF, disagreeing with the state government’s assertion that the controversial CAA will not impact the State of Nagaland as areas that falls under the Inner Line Permit notified under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873 will be outside the Act’s purviewm stated that the "reality at Ground Zero clearly proves the contrary." The NSF has further lamented that the mechanism in applying ILP has failed miserably in the state.

"The nationwide exercise of NRC and NPR and their requirements for proper implementation of the discriminatory CAA in the country reeks of agenda that is not in the interest of the citizens of this country but only to further the political interest of some", the NSF stated, and called upon the Chief Minister to place the issue of CAA on the floor of the house for thorough deliberation along with all the elected members and thereafter adopt a firm resolution denouncing the law", read the Naga student body's communique.
