Kohima, August 5, 2019:

Commuting in the Northeastern State Nagaland is well on its way to becoming a whole lot more affordable after the Nagaland Cabinet approved two-wheeler taxi services in the State. This was done with a view to provide opportunities for unemployed youths of the State to generate income.

According to a cabinet memo, Regional Transport Authority (RTA) of the districts would be the permit issuing authority for two-wheeler taxis in their respective districts with a limit. Also, to be eligible for registration as a taxi, the two wheeler must be brand new and have insurance cover for at least third party risks at all time as per provision of Sec. 146 (1) of the MVA 1988.

It is to be mentioned that permits will only be given to indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland and only the persons who have the permit shall be allowed to drive the vehicles.

This move comes after the Kohima Two Wheeler Taxi Association (TWTA) had submitted a representation to the State government, appealing to legalise two-wheeler taxi service in Nagaland.
