Kohima: Polling is officially underway in Nagaland for the bypolls to the 14 Southern Angami-I (ST) Assembly constituency. Although the official date of polling has been set for November 3, senior citizens, people with disabilities (PwDs), and Covid-19 positive patients have already cast their votes on Wednesday and Thursday.

Kohim'sa deputy commissioner and district election officer Mohammed Ali Shihab A has informed that polling teams, along with security personnel, visited these the voters with postal ballots at the addresses mentioned in their application Form 12D. They were later allowed to cast their votes.
These people casted their votes in pursuance of the instructions given by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on September 17 last.

The bypolls in another Assembly constituency -- 60 Pungro Kiphire (ST) seat -- is also scheduled on November 3. Around the same time, bypolls to 4 Assembly Constituencies will also be held in adjoining Manipur. Needless to say, electioneering has begun in earnest in both these Northeastern states as the political parties seek morale boosters ahead of the Assembly elections.

It needs mention here that all establishments, including government offices and shops, will remain closed in the areas falling under the two constituencies on the day of polling.

The government also said paid holiday will be granted to all employees in the areas of the constituencies, including those electors working outside the constituencies. This measure has been taken to encourage the voters to turn up at the booths on the given days.

However, this will not apply to any elector whose absence may cause danger or substantial loss in respect of the employment in which he/she is engaged.
