KOHIMA: Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting to discuss prevailing scenario of unrest in Nagaland in view of civilian killings on December 23. The meeting was attended by Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and others. In the meeting, it was decided that a committee will be instituted to look into the withdrawal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Nagaland, the state government has said.

Today, Rio briefed the media with regard to the meeting and expressed his gratitude to Amit Shah for taking up the matter with utmost seriousness. He also added that the committee will submit its report within 45 days.

Informing this on his official Twitter handle, Rio tweeted "The State Govt appeals to all sections to continue to maintain a peaceful atmosphere."

After a botched anti insurgency operation by armed forces in which 13 unarmed civilians civilians were killed in Mon district's Oting village, Rio said the incident was a misuse and abuse of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA)

Speaking at a tribute programme for victims of the Oting incident held at the Capital Cultural Hall in Kohima, Neiphiu Rio said the AFSPA is violative of human rights and the people of Nagaland have opposed it for decades. “It is the time to defeat violence with non-violence,” Neiphiu Rio said. Fourteen civilians were killed in firing incidents at Oting village on December 4 and at Mon town in Nagaland’s Mon district on December 5.
