KOHIMA: The Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has announced that it will not accept any market extortion or underground (UG) tax in the market.

The MCCI said in a statement that rather than paying extortion, they will prefer to close the doors of business, adding that at a time when Mokokchung was reeling from the impact of the COVID outbreak, it was barely able to keep the wheels of the economy turning.

The MCCI further warned that the development should not catch police and law enforcement organisations off guard.

According to MCCI, “there are some gun-toting scroungers trying to pillage the market and loot innocents, hardworking, productive citizens- the business community- at a time when the business environment was abruptly disrupted with traders forced to bear the brunt of prolonged lockdowns and all traders and daily wage earners in dire straits.

MCCI added that a number of factions were coercing traders to pay a “tax” with some pushing to charge a item-wise tax or whatever that meant.

According to the MCCI, Mokokchung is neither a formal market nor a board game where anyone can break the rules at any time.
