Dimapur, September 22, 2019:

The Public Action Committee (PAC) has concluded its week-long vigil against illegal taxation and collection at check gates in Dimapur, Nagaland on Saturday.

Although the PAC has ended its watch, it has warned to resume the movement if illegal taxation by the local authorities is not ceased.

Convenor, PAC, Vekhosayi Nyekha said that the group had plans to continue its movement, but did not disclose the specifics.

It is to be mentioned here that volunteers had been keeping watch on three check gates in Dimapur since September 16-21. These were the Dillai check gate, New Field check gate and Burma Camp check gate.

PAC members informed that the volunteers had discovered that drivers of six-wheeled lorries entering Dimapur had to pay an amount of Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 52,000 per trip (depending on the no. of wheels) to various Naga Political Groups (NPGs).

They also said that around 60 per cent of Imphal-bound trucks, passing through Assam, prefer to travel through the Silchar-Jiribam route, so that they can avoid Dimapur on account of heavy taxations at check gates.

In a representation addressed to the District Commissioner of Dimapur, the PAC has also demanded that the district administration exerts control and regulation on the prices of various items in the market within a week.

It has warned of imposing an indefinite bandh in Dimapur if the authorities fail to comply to their demands. PAC further cautioned that if prices of commodities went unchecked within the following week, then truckers, syndicates, suppliers, wholesalers, transporters and agencies would be held responsible and made answerable to the public.
