KOHIMA: The Nagaland Government has ordered the shutting down 3 wells of state-run energy giant Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) accusing them of not obtaining prior permission before started drilling activities.

The decision has sparked controversy as the well sites are claimed to be within the territory of neighbouring state Assam.

Rajesh Soundarajan, Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, issued a notice to the company in June reported by PTI.

In that letter, it was mentioned that the oil company has started drilling without any prior notice at Piheku, Tokishe and Nikihe villages "under Dimapur district without prior permission from the Government of Nagaland."

Soundarajan has also asked for a clarification on the same from Arakan Basin, ONGC Executive Director, Assam, at the earliest and till then the Nagaland government stayed the drilling.

Reportedly, ONGC had taken the required permission from the Assam Government for drilling purposes.

The ONGC is yet to make a statement regarding the same.
