KOHIMA: Amid an ongoing stand-off between Assam and Mizoram, tension still continues to prevail along the Assam Nagaland border at Tzurangkong under Mokokchung due to the presence of Assam police at the Vikuto village area.

Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung Limawapang Jamir yesterday said that he has written a complaint letter to his Jorhat counterpart about Nagaland bound trucks carrying essential commodities being held up for hours at New Sonowal Forest check gate in Assam.

Jamir said that he is yet to get a response on this issue from his counterpart. Meanwhile, on being queried about the recent developments on construction of roads and barracks around the Vikuto village area, the DC stated that it cannot be confirmed officially as Assam Police stationed are not allowing anyone including the administrative officers to move beyond.

Confirming about the July 23 incident at Aosungkum village where Assam police personnel allegedly destroyed some developmental structures built under MGNREGA, the DC regretted the unilateral action taken by Assam and opined that they should have contacted the district administration and conducted a joint verification at the spot.

ASSAM-NAGALAND BORDER ROW:

The current issue is stated to have escalated after Assam organizations accused Nagaland of setting up a police camp inside Dissoi Valley Reserved Forest and deployed armed Assam police to the area and also erected a temporary camp near the disputed area.

Nagaland and Assam share a 512-kilometer boundary and a dispute that has been going on for over five decades. Both states have refused to accept recommendations of two commissions set up by the Centre to solve the issue and a suit is pending in Supreme Court on the issue since 1988.
