Assam: Narcotics seized from pharmacy near Bhutan border; peddler arrested

TAMULPUR: Baksa police authorities carrying out a drive against drugs were able to seize a major consignment of narcotics last evening. A single suspected peddler has been arrested.

The consignment of 203 banned pills was seized from at Darrangamela near the Indo-Bhutan border. Interestingly, the banned substance was being sold at a certain Ashirban pharmacy by its proprietor Ishahaq Ali.

Ali, who has been arrested by police, has been accused of running a drugs racket in the area for a long time.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered at the Tamulpur Police station against the accused.

A day earlier, a police team from Tamulpur raided the Kumarikata market of Baksa district and arrested a 24-year-old youth named Ambrush Narzary and seized 8.97 kg of ganja from his possession. Police seized the ganja while the youth was coming to the Kumarikata market from Rowta in Udalguri district riding a motorcycle without number plate.

Assam Police has launched a massive operation against drugs in the past one month as part of their operation ‘War on Drugs'. Several drug peddlers have been and a huge quantity of drugs from various locations of Assam have been seized.

The Assam DGP (Director-General of Police) said 35 arrests were made and 20 cases registered on Sunday alone.

DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta told reporters in Guwahati that the seizure list from that day consisted of 469.7 grams of heroin, 574.31 kg ganja, 1499 tablets and Rs. 20,700 in cash.

Last month, 2,439 grams of heroin, 91 kg of ganja, 17,551 bottles of cough syrup, around 1.57 lakh methamphetamine tablets, 14.16 grams of morphine and ₹ 10.5 lakh in cash were seized.

Overall, the DGP said, 1,008 people have been arrested and 618 cases registered since the crackdown on drugs began in January.
