GUWAHATI: Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar is likely to visit Assam today and most likely announce the next chief minister of the state by tomorrow, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit president Ranjeet Kumar Dass asserted today.

“The decision on Assam’s next CM will be taken today by the parliamentary board,” said Dass talking to the media.

Singh will hold a discussion with the elected MLAs of Assam to get their views mostly likely on the same regard and will fly back to Delhi.

Singh will hold separate discussions with incumbent chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the two contenders for the CM’s post, at their respective residences.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) swept the Assam assembly polls on May 2 with 75 seats and today NDA will stake claim with the Assam governor to form the government.

Though the BJP fought the election under incumbent chief minister Sonowal, but throughout the election period it was quite visible that minister Sarma was the real crowd puller and his aggressive campaigns helped NDA to get people’s mandate to an extent.

On the other hand, former AASU leader Sonowal’s simple and clean image has always been the factor for him to be the leader wherever he stands.

Reports said a cold wind was blowing inside the BJP for the CM office even before the election. If Sonowal had secured a position in the party by joining earlier, Sarma had proven himself by rooting Congress out of not only Assam but in other north eastern states as well by forming regional parties’ alliances with the BJP and became the convenor of North East Democratic Alliance.

Now today’s proposed parliamentary board meeting will clear the air and Assam will get its next chief minister.
