Chirang, January 6, 2020:
A National Democratic Front of Boroland- Saoraigra (NDFB-S) platoon commander was reportedly shot dead by security forces and police during an ambush in Assam’s Chirang district on Sunday.
The commander has been identified as Sansula Basumatary alias B. Sotbangsha, a self-styled Platoon Commander of 16 Battalion of NDFB-S. According to official sources, a search operation was launched by the Army unit in Chirang and Assam police at New Basti of Dwimalupara in Khungring of Chirang district. During the operation, the ambush party noticed an armed militant approaching and upon being asked to stop, the NDFB(S) militant opened fire on them. The team retaliated and the militant sustained injuries.
The commander was rushed to the JSB Civil Hospital in Kajalgaon, the district headquarters for treatment. However, the NDFB(S) leader succumbed to his injuries.
According to official reports, B. Sotbangsha was active in Chirang district and was responsible for extortion, recruitment of new cadres and “anti-national activities”. During a search at the encounter-site, two pistols, two grenades, war-like stores and a huge sum of money were recovered, said official sources.
