Guwahati, December 6, 2019:

The Northeast Students' Organization (NESO), which is an umbrella body of student organizations, has called for a Northeast-wide bandh on December 10 as a mark of protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The 'bandh' will be in effect from 5 am in the morning till 4 pm in the evening. However, the parts of Nagaland which are celebrating the 'Hornbill Festival' will be exempted from the 'bandh'. In Nagaland, the Naga Students' Federation (NSF) will be staging a protest in front of the Raj Bhavan in the state.

While speaking to Inside Northeast, the Chief Adviser of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Samujjal Bhattacharya, said that a "spontaneous" bandh by the NESO was called after a high-level meeting of the student body in Guwahati city of Assam.

It may be mentioned here that the NESO has been launching protests across all the Northeastern states due to opposition over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

It may be mentioned here that the Government is aiming to amend a 1955 law that grants citizenship to persecuted Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis and Christians from the Muslim-dominated countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan if they have lived in India for six years or more.
