New Delhi, November 27, 2019:

A delegation of the Northeast Students' Organization (NESO) on Wednesday called on Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to raise concerns about the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The NESO leaders reportedly held a discussion with the Meghalaya Chief Minister in the lead up to its re-introduction in Parliament.

The Bill, which is seen as a threat to their identity by the indigenous tribals of the Northeastern region, will likely be tabled during the ongoing winter session of the Parliament. The Bill, which lapsed in the Parliament earlier this year, has reportedly been revised after the earlier draft was widely criticized by the people of the Northeast Indian states, who held sustained protests against the Bill.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Meghalaya Chief Minister played an integral role in the struggle against the Bill in January and February, 2019.

Meanwhile, the anti-Citizenship Bill protests have already gained momentum across the Northeast — with civil society groups, student bodies, and indigenous organizations already launching full-scale protests against the Bill.

On November 22, the Northeast Students’ Organization (NESO) had launched a series of protests across all capital cities of the Northeast, with thousands upon thousands of students, activists, and concerned citizens taking part in the protests.
