MORAN: Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha on Thursday dared Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to free jailed Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leader Akhil Gogoi and face him in a political battle in a democratic spirit.

The challenge came from the KMSS-backed Raijor Dal’s first state convention site here close on the heels of the Gauhati High Court rejecting Gogoi’s bail plea today.

Calling Sonowal a “coward”, Chaliha said: “It's a fascist government. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal is a coward. We will not allow the BJP and RSS's sinister designs to continue anymore. We will stage intense agitation.”

“I warn the BJP that it should not try to murder democracy. If you try, we will be standing like a wall in front of you. A coward chief minister like Sarbananda Sonowal, who cannot face a man politically, will have to face us.

“The day Akhil Gogoi will be out of confinement, Sonowal's chair would be blown away to the Brahmaputra. And Raijor Dal is determined to do so. Sarbananda Sonowal shame on you! Shame! Shame!” the youth leader added in his bitter criticism of the state government.

According to his fellow KMSS leader Dhaijya Konwar, Gogoi would contest the Assam Assembly polls in April from Sivasagar on a Raijor Dal ticket.

Gogoi was arrested on sedition charges from Jorhat on December 12, 2019, the second day of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act agitation in the state. He has since been lodged in jail as the National Investigation Agency and the state forces slapped various charges on the vociferous peasant leader.

Chaliha, another fiery youth leader, was also arrested during the anti-CAA agitation early last year, but was later released on bail.
