Assam: Major blow to BJP ahead of BTC election, hundreds of workers quit party

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has endured a major blow in Baksa’s Tamulpur in Assam ahead of the ensuing general election of the Bodoland Territorial Council. Around 500 workers from BJP and the UPPL joined the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) on July 2^nd, 2020.

“Joining of the workers has strengthened the BPF. It has proved the importance of the party for the development of the BTR,” Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Biswajit Daimary said.

He claimed that people have now inclined towards BPF. “They want development of the region and for that, they think, BPF is the right party,” he added.

He also expressed confidence that the party would win the general election of the council and form BTC government for the fourth consecutive time.

Workers from UPPL, Gana Suraksha Samiti and Oboro Suraksha Samiti also joined the BPF.

Meanwhile, Ringchar Boro, who shifted from BJP to BPF, expressed dissatisfaction over the deeds of the BJP. “BJP gave tickets to new faces ignoring the leaders who have been working for decades for the party. This resented the party workers and compelled to quit the party,” he added.

It may be mentioned that the elections for the BTC were slated to be held on April 4^th, 2020 while the counting on April 8^th, 2020. The last date of filing the nominations was March 18th, 2020 and the last date of withdrawing the nominations was March 21st, 2020.

But, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 leading to enforcement of the nationwide lockdown, the elections were deferred. No new date has been declared by the Commission yet.

A total of 23,86,359 electors will exercise franchise in 3077 polling stations across 40 BTC constituencies.

The BTC constituencies are:

Parbatjhora (ST), Guma ( Open), Srirampur (Non ST), Jomduar (ST), Saraibil (ST), Kachugaon (ST), Fakiragram (Non ST), Dotma (ST), Bonorgaon (ST), Deborgaon (ST), Baukhungri (ST), Salakati (ST), Chirang (ST), Chirang Duar (ST), Kajalgaon (ST), Nichima, Subhaijhar (ST), Manosh Serfang (ST), Thuribari (Open), Mothanguri (Open), Salbari (ST), Kakilabari (ST), Dihira (Open), Mushalpur (ST), Baganpara (ST), Darangajuli (ST), Nagrijuli (Non ST), Gaybari (ST), Suklai Serfang (ST), Goreswar (ST), Khwirabari (ST), Bhergaon (ST), Nonwi Serfang (Non ST), Khakling Duar (ST), Mudwibari (Open), Harisinga (ST), Dhanshri (ST), Bhwirabkundu (ST), Pachnoi Serfang (Non ST) and Rowta (ST).
