GUWAHATI: Nishita Goswami, the Assam actress who was at the receiving end of an allegedly "sexist" remark by youth icon Zubeen Garg, has finally broken her silence on the issue.

Yesterday, Goswami shared a picture on Facebook that carried the following words: "She is a woman, she is a mother, she is a daughter, she is a wife, she is a wife. Respect female."

Although Goswami has not broken her silence on social media, she disclosed to Inside Northeast that the incident has left a scarring effect on some of her family members. She also added that the ordeal has left her "mentally disturbed."

The controversy surfaced when Zubeen made a joke about Goswami's private parts at the Prag Cine award show, one of the premier events in Assam.

"We all know that Zubeen da is like a brother to me and he does not think much and likes to joke around. It is rather unfortunate, however, that such comments were made at a show attended by thousands of people in wide view of the public," Goswami told Inside Northeast.

The 'Ratnakar' actress also said that Zubeen Garg should have been "aware of the surroundings" before making such a remark. "On that stage, I referred to my mother as ma'am. Therefore, we are all expected to maintain decorum on the stage notwithstanding the circumstances. Therefore, women should be respected -- especially by people who hold such a sway over the mass public."
