NLFB leader Jyotish Daimary arrested by Meghalaya Police in West Jaintia Hills

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police yesterday arrested a top leader of a newly formed Assam militant outfit National Liberation Front of Boroland (NLFB) Jyotish Daimary from West Jaintia Hills district.

Acting on a tip-off about extremists’s presence in the Jaintia Hills district, a team of Meghalaya Police arrested 42-year-old Daimary from Amlarem area of West Jaiñtia Hills. The NLFB is led by former National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) leader M Batha.

Police seized six mobile phones, including three smartphones besides a vehicle, bearing registration number AS 01AE 4845, and incriminating documents from him.

Daimary was wanted in several cases of abduction, murder etc in East and West Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts of Meghalaya. 

The rebel has been handed to Ri-Bhoi police in connection with criminal cases registered against him.

A former member of the disbanded NDFB, Daimary had laid down arms in January 2020, after the signing of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Accord with four factions of the NDFB and the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU).

He had joined the NDFB in 2009 and had gone to Bangladesh through Mahendranj area in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district for arms training. 

This time too, Daimary was apparently on his way to the international border for arms deal of training of cadres.

Meghalaya Police sources said they were interrogating him about his movement in Meghalaya.
