AGARTALA: THE Tripura police on Wednesday arrested a cadre of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), Hiranmoy Tripura from Raisabari in Dhalai district. 

The judge remanded him to judicial custody till January 22.

According to sources, two cases were recently filed at Gandacherra and Raishyabari police station about the extortion calls made by NLFT to some local businessmen and government employees.

The people who received such calls included Rangchak Tripura, Engineer of Raishyabari RD Block, and Bikram Saha, Brick Kiln, owner of GNC.

The 38-year-old Hiranmoy had reportedly been threatening a few businessmen in the area to pay up the extortion money.

He had also threatened an engineer over the phone to pay up the money demanded by the extremist group.

Hiranmoy reportedly called two people from Raisabari using two SIMs from Bangladesh and one from India.

Police believed that they will recover more information about operations of NLFT from the young man during interrogation.

The police have been able to identify the young man using advanced technology and they have received information about more people being involved in the extortion racket.

NLFT extremists had also abducted three workers from Gandacherra in Dhalai in December last year.
