GUWAHATI: The National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA) has bagged 20th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking this year.

The NLUJAA has been established by the Government of Assam by way of enactment of the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009 (Assam Act No. XXV of 2009).

The word 'School' was later replaced by the word 'University' by amending the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam (Amendment) Act, 2011.

NLUJAA promotes and makes available modern legal education and research facilities to students and scholars drawn from across the country, including the Northeast, coming from different socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds.

What is National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ?

NIRF is the first-ever effort by the government to rank higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country.

The Framework was approved by the Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and launched on September 29, 2015.

Prior to the establishment of the NIRF in 2016, HEIs were typically ranked by private entities, particularly news magazines.

While participation in the NIRF was initially voluntary, it was made mandatory for all government-run educational institutions in 2018.

This year, approximately 6,000 institutions took part in NIRF.
