GUWAHATI: Despite a sudden spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the Kamrup (Metro) district of Assam, there have been no discussions of clamping a lockdown, Biswajit Pegu, the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metropolitan told Inside Northeast.

Asked about the circulation of reports that claim that the most populous district could see the imposition of another spell of curbs, Pegu said that "not all news is news."

"The circulation of such unfounded rumours on social media proves that not all news is news. A decision in this regard can only be taken by the Assam state government. And as far as we can tell, there have been no discussions in this regard," he told Inside Northeast.

The rumours of another lockdown in Guwahati started doing the rounds after a fresh wave of COVID-19 infections were reported recently.

In another worrying development, Guwahati's Don Bosco School has been sealed for seven days after several teachers tested positive for Covid-19.

In an order issued on Sunday, Pegu declared the entire school premises as a "containment zone" till February 27 to prevent the further spread of coronavirus among the teaching staff and students.

"In view of detection of Covid-19 positive teachers at Don Bosco school, Guwahati, of Kamrup Metropolitan district, in the interest of the maintenance of public hygiene and to prevent further spread of Covid-19 virus amongst the teaching staff and students, the entire area of the school premises is declared as a containment zone for next seven days," the official order said.

The rest of the teachers and support staff of the school were tested for the virus by the Assam health department, but all tests were 'negative.'

Lockdowns have been reimposed in some parts of Maharashtra and authorities have banned all religious or cultural programs.
