No plans for lockdown in Delhi despite 4th wave of COVID-19: Kejriwal

NEW DELHI: Delhi is grappling with the fourth wave of COVID-19 outbreak, but still there are no plans for imposing lockdown in the state, said chief minister Arvind Kejriwal yesterday.

He urged the central government to encourage states to perform mass vaccinations and to remove the age limit for vaccinations.

He further appealed to people to continue wearing masks and maintain social distancing and other COVID protocols.

If a lockdown is needed in the future, the decision will be made after discussion, adding this he said that the fourth wave is less serious than the previous ones because there are fewer deaths and hospitalisations this time.

Meanwhile, Delhi, which had been registering just a few hundred cases for the past many weeks, has unexpectedly started reporting thousands of new coronavirus infections.

As many as 3,583 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in the state in the last 24 hours.

The latest surge in cases is the pandemic's fourth wave.

“There is no need to be worried; we are taking all possible measures,” said CM Kejriwal.

He said they are focusing on COVID-19 vaccination.

At least 71,000 vaccinations were done in Delhi yesterday, however, there is no plan for a lockdown, the chief minister added.
