NEW DELHI: New Delhi men have triggered outrage after they asked a group of Northeast girls about their "hourly rate for sexual activities", thereby implying they were hookers.

The said incident occurred in Delhi's party hub of Hauz Khaz around 10 pm on July 19.

The girls were stopped by a group of middle-aged who provoked them in the street of Hauz Khas of South Delhi following which they whipped out their cell phone cameras and recording the affronters.

The video went viral after the girls shared it on social media.

In the video, it can be seen a group of men of middle-age approached, and one among them apparently asked the girls ‘Rate kya hai?’ (What is your rate?).

The girls were out meeting their friends in Hauz Khas village and were waiting for their cab and a friend who was a guy.

Meanwhile, the group of men approached them and one among them asked about their "hourly rate", they said. One of the girls screamed out after the demeaning insult and asked for help, following which the men fled the spot, but nobody responded or came to help them.

They said instead of helping them, some of the people surrounding them were busy shooting the incident. The girls also reported the incident to a passing police officer, but shockingly, instead of dealing with the situation and taking an action, the officer simply smiled, said the girls.

Later, when they went to a restaurant to have food, they met another police official and recounted the incident to which the police officer asked her if she is a dancer.

The police officer also told the girls that they should be honest with him as he would not do anything to them. The women explained that they were students and when they threatened to film the policeman, he fled.

The Delhi Commission for Women Swati Maliwa has taken suo-moto cognizance on media reports of the alleged incident of racial discrimination and sexual harassment and said this is a very serious matter and needs to be dealt with very strictly.

However, it has been reported that no FIR has been registered in the matter so far.

The video has once again raised apprehensions that girls from Northeastern states are not safe in Delhi.
