Guwahati, July 24, 2019:

"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today" – Malcolm X. The Indian Government is putting more and more emphasis on the need to usher in an education revolution in the country, including in the Northeast Indian states.

It may be mentioned that during her budget speech, Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the need to nurture and polish the homegrown talents in India itself, as the Government has committed to spend Rs. 400 crores on institutions of higher learning.

This move has been necessitated by an Education boom in the country, as the number of colleges and institutions in the country has seen a steady trajectory of rise due to the highly competitive era we live in and education is considered a 'crutch' for the students to compete, cope, and excel in life. Moreover, education has taken a dramatic shift towards the 'creative' and 'innovative' and the old methods are coming under increasing scrutiny day-by-day. Parents have begun to re-ponder the question: "What is best for the child?" They are starting to question and try and discover more avenues, vistas, and possibilities for the advancement of the youth as well as the country, as they are expected to surge ahead together.

Education is one of the major indices of socio-economic development, and it is being given strict emphasis by the Governments of the seven Northeast 'sisters': Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Tripura. The educational programmes have reached the grassroots level, and significant strides have been made to develop the educational infrastructure in the State. Arunachal Pradesh's Namsai has been ranked no. 1 in the education sector among 'aspirational districts' in the country.

However, challenges are many. As recently as 2010, the UGC website revealed that altogether 44 districts in the Northeast region fall under the 'educationally backward' category. Assam all other states as 12 districts in Assam were deigned to be 'educationally backward'.

The inability of the Northeastern region to reach new heights in the education sector can perhaps be attributed to inadequate physical infrastructure, lack of innovative outlook and research, inadequate funds, and lack of an adequate number of committed teachers and professors. This has led to the widely-discussed phenomenon of 'brain drain', as many Northeasterners leave the state in droves in search of 'education' and enlightenment.

But, thankfully, the bleeding is finally signs of stopping as many reputed institutions (both Government and Private) and universities have sprung up in the region, offering world class facilities in our very own backyard in the Northeast. Some of the institutions making the difference are  the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, , Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok, ICFAI University, Aizawl, Royal Global University, Assam among other.
