Several rebel groups from Northeast India have called for a boycott of Independence Day celebration. The anti-talk faction United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I), National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), and People’s Democratic Council of Karbi-Longri have called for a total ban on India’s Independence Day celebration in WeSEA (Western South East Asia) region.

“We urge upon total shutdown of all commercial activities, administrative services and educational institutions between 12 midnight to 18:00 hours on 15 August 2020 except for most essential and emergency services,” a joint statement of the ULFA and NSCN stated.

The statement further reads: “This time while COVID -19 calamity was unfolding, colonial India makes the same mistake and send her soldiers in May 2020 to move into Chinese territory with another apparent forward push policy resulting in a hand to hand combat between the soldiers of the two countries.”

The statement also read: “It is incredible to see colonial India’s expansionism, but, we need to remind ourselves of the saying in India, “Wherever Hinduism has gone that is India”. However, the historical Nations of our regions have tasted colonial Indian expansionism since they inherited the divided parts of British administered India. As a result of erroneous decolonisation processes we all have been subjected to occupation and our freedom struggles have been thwarted with military subjugation and through the colonial Indian constitution.”
