Shillong, June 7, 2019:

National People’s Party (NPP) led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday got recognition from the Election Commission of India (ECI) as a national party.

The Election Commission of India in its order issued on June 7 granted recognition to NPP as a National Party.

“Further, as per the request of the Party, the symbol ‘Book’ has been allotted as the reserved symbol for the National People’s Party,” the order signed by secretary Pramod Kumar Sharma stated.

The NPP has fulfilled the criteria to qualify as a national party after winning five seats in the recently held Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election.

Since the party is recognized as a State Party in four states of Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, it has fulfilled the criteria to get recognition as a national party.

The party Chief, as well as Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma, was elated to hear the news of NPP getting recognition as a National Party.

"It is a very nostalgic moment for all of us that the party founded by Late Purno Agitok Sangma has achieved its due recognition. It is not just an achievement for NPP but for the people of #Northeast for their overwhelming support and trust bestowed on the party," Conrad Sangma tweeted.

Former Lok Sabha speaker Purno Agitok Sangma founded the National People’s Party in January 2013. NPP is a partner in the ruling NDA at the Centre.
