New Delhi, December 29, 2019:

The Director General of Bangladesh Border Guard, Major General Shafeenul Islam, during his bilateral visit to India, refrained from commenting on the “internal matters” of the country, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Islam was seen choosing his statements carefully amid the ongoing concerns of some of the states of India over non-Muslim migrants’ being offered citizenship in the country.

On questioning on the NRC, Islam said, “This is completely an internal affair of the Indian government,” and when he was asked about the provisions of the CAA, he declined to comment. He, however, said that the Border Security Force of India and the Bangladesh Border Guard share a good relationship.

Islam informed that an inquiry has been going on to check the case of the killing of a BSF Jawan by a BGB trooper along the India-Bangladesh International Border in West Bengal. He termed the incident as “unfortunate, unwarranted and unexpected”.
