Kokrajhar, August 9, 2019:

As the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is being readied for an August 31 publication, there have been many allegations against the NRC authorities for unduly harassing the citizens. Today, the All Assam Minorities Students' Union (AAMSU) staged a protest held in front of the DC's office in Kokrajhar district of Assam against the alleged injustices to the minority communities.

Many of the organisation's supporters turned out carrying banners with messages like "we want justice", "strictly follow the principles of NRC", "follow the SOP", etc.

"Minorities have been targeted, and they are harassing us by summoning us 300-400 kms away. We are not saying that the hearings should not be held, but not like this", said Kokrajhar AAMSU President Aminul Islam.

The organization also wrote to the Home Secretary, Government of India, in protest against the alleged discrepancies in the NRC procedure. Moreover, the AAMSU decried the sample re-verification that is carried out by the NRC authorities, in violation of the Supreme Court's order.

Moreover, the AAMSU informed that the Supreme Court had ordered that at least 15 days be given to the people to attend the hearing from the date of issuing the notice. However, it has been seen that they are being summoned as many as 500 kms away on a single day's notice. This has created a 'humanitarian crisis' in Assam, claimed the AAMSU, adding that many people have been either killed or injured on their way to attend the hearings on risky modes of travel.
