NSCN-IM imposes "ban" on bursting of firecrackers ahead of Diwali

KOHIMA: Ahead of the commencement of the 'Festival of lights' Diwali, the Isaak Muivah faction of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) has "banned" the use of firecrackers due to the "necessity to preserve our natural resources in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic."

"With the COVID-19 having penetrated in Nagalim in a menacing manner, use of firecrackers and other fireworks as normally seen during the festive season of Diwali shall be strictly banned as it matters to the health of the people and the environment," Salem Yang Gangmei, Kilonser, Ministry of Forest and Environment, GPRN, said in a statement issued on November 13.

The NSCN-IM leader also stated that the "logging and random cutting down of trees in the reserved forest and community protected forest is strictly banned.

The NSCN (IM) further added that the "unethical method" of fishing and hunting using poisonous chemicals, dynamo, and explosives is being viewed very seriously. It has advised the people to apply the traditional methods of hunting and fishing "as this prevents excessive killings and thereby wastage."

"With the advent of winter season, there is a tendency to go for reckless burning of forest by individuals and villages. This should be rationalized as burning of forests acffect our environment directly which subsequently unbalance our ecological system."
