DIMAPUR: The Naga Rengma Hills national workers of the NSCN (IM) said the Rengma people will never allow Kuki Regional Autonomous Council to be set up in their lands.

NSCN (IM) kilonser (minister) and supremo of Naga Rengma Hills national workers Joseph Rengma, said the Assam government's proposal to establish a Kuki Regional Autonomous Council to appease Kuki militants has come as a big surprise.

Rengma said the much-publicized visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Assam recently has created an uncomfortable situation in the Rengma Naga Hills of Assam, and that this will eventually conflict with the interests of the Rengma people, the original indigenous inhabitants.

He stated that the Rengma national workers have taken a hard stance against this "unjustified plan," adding that this would inevitably stoke political tensions in the Rengma Hills.

Renga mentioned that they are particularly opposed to the memorandum submitted to Shah by chief executive member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Tuliram Ronghang to enact Article 244 (A) to elevate the district to the level of statehood.

He said, "This is not in the interest of the son of the soil."

The Assam government and the Centre should not take harsh decisions, fearing that more problems would arise.

He stated that the interests of Kukis or Karbis should not take precedence over the interests of the Rengma people, as history has clearly defined the Rengma people's political rights in the Rengma Naga Hills.
