The Oil India Limited (OIL) will launch “city gas” service in greater Guwahati area and Barak Valley. Under this, cooking gas will be supplied to houses through pipes.

Disclosing this at a press conference in Guwahati on Saturday, OIL’s Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Utpal Bora said a joint venture (JV) for the same had been already signed.

“Our plan is to cover Guwahati and its surrounding areas along with Silchar, Hailakandi and Karimganj in Barak Valley. The JV has been signed. We are expecting to implement the project within three years,” he said.

“Cooking gas will be supplied to houses 24X7. The charges will be based on usage and a metre will record it. It will be like electricity supply,” he said.

On the OIL’s project “Super 30”, Bora said 828 students were enrolled so far and out of these, 153 got admitted to various IITs. The rest of them secured admissions in NITs and engineering colleges.

“The OIL spends about Rs.2.5 lakh per student during the 11-month course. This includes everything – from food to boarding. Seventeen students joined PSUs (public sector undertakings) while two joined the OIL,” he said.

He also said that few desire to join the PSUs after passing out of an IIT. “As they look for greener pastures, few of them actually look for a job in the PSUs,” Bora said.

Bright students with poor financial condition are enrolled into OIL’s “Super 30”. Currently, there are six centres – four of them in Assam and one each in Arunachal and Rajasthan.
