Guwahati, November 26, 2018:

Even though the last for filing the claims and objectives for National Register of Citizens (NRC), so far out of the total 40,07,707 people excluded from the NRC, only 5,11,254 have applied for re-inclusion in it.

Upamanyu Hazarika, convenor, Prabajan Virodhi Manch (PVM) said, “The NRC claims and obestions period opened on September 2018 and is closing on December 15, 2018. It has thrown up worrying trends, in terms of both the number of claims and objections filed.”

In a press statement, Upamanyu said, “According to publicly available figures 511254 of those excluded have applied for re-inclusion and 194 objections have been filed as of November 22, 2018. Both these figures are on the extremely low side. According to official figures 40,07,707 have been excluded from the final draft and the last date of filling claims and objections is December 15 and with barely three weeks to go for the deadline, 12.5 per cent submission for re-inclusion is mysterious to say the least.”

He added, “If 40 lakh applicants have been excluded and who have gone through a rigorous procedure of form filling, verification etc. Iot is necessary to investigate the reasons for such low percentage of submission and made public.”

He added that filing objections against 194 applicants is minuscule. To give perspective, the figure released regarding the number of those excluded 40.07 lakhs is far short of the official estimates over the last few decades.

“If then Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia had given a figure of 32 lakh in 1992, UPA MoS Home Sriprakash Jaiswal 50 lakh in 2001 and MoS Home Kiren Rijiju 80 Lakh in 2016, such a huge shortfall in exclusion and necessarily included in the NRC should have been objected to”, he added.
