HAFLONG: Congress leaders of Hima Hasao district have alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Thursday thrashed their party workers while also vandalizing as many as 4 vehicles in Umrangso Circle of Dima Hasao district ahead of polls.

Congress leaders Sojesh Thaosen, Kote Kemprai, and Bapojith Langthasa today filed an FIR at the Dehangi police station in which they named 25 accused, including Sanjit Nunisa, the PA to Debolal Gorlosa, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC).

According to the FIR, the incident occurred when a group of Congress workers went to visit a certain Holendra Warisa, the village head of Dikrengma, to discuss some election-related issues.

"When we were about to leave the house of the gan burah, a group of people (belonging to BJP) whose names are mentioned below assaulted us. They came in camper vehicle Isuzu bearing registration number AS-08a-0459 and Auto," stated the FIR.

4 vehicles belonging to the Congress workers were also damaged by the mob, it was alleged in the FIR.

"The workers from our party were in the village headman's house when the BJP affiliated goons barged in and began threatening them. They asked them why they were campaigning there and were soundly thrashed right in front of the headman. They had to flee for their lives. Their vehicles were vandalized and only police intervention restored the situation to normal," Dima Hasao Congress leader Daniel Langthasa told reporters.

Meanwhile, the attacked workers have urged the police administration to "take action at the earliest."

"This has been going on for a long time. But this time, it is more than we can bear. We therefore urge the police to take action at the earliest and we have faith that they will do the right thing," said one of the workers.
