New Delhi, January 31, 2020:
Over 78,000 employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) retired on Friday by availing the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).
BSNL Chairman and Managing Director PK Purwar informed that 78,300 employees availed the VRS till the closing of the scheme, which is as per BSNL’s target. He also said that BSNL was expecting a reduction of 82,000 employees.
The mass retirement has been viewed as BSNL’s way to survive the financial crisis. It may be mentioned here that the VRS was available to the employees who attained 50 years and above. The amount of ex-gratia for employees eligible for the scheme is reported to be equal to the salary of 35 days for each completed year of service and that of 25 days for every year of service left until superannuation.
Apart from the 78,300 employees of BSNL, more than 14,000 employees of MTNL also availed the VRS.
