Guwahati, April 7, 2019:

As Assam is gearing up to head to the polls during the Phase-I of voting on April 11, let us examine the assets of the BJP candidates who will contest the ensuing elections in the state during the first phase of voting.

Out of the 41 candidates who have been approved by the Election Commission to contest the election in the five constituencies – Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kaliabor, Tezpur, and Lakhimpur – a whopping 39% are ‘crorepatis’ (meaning they have assets worth over Rs. 10 million).

The Indian National Congress, the ‘grand old party’, leads the ‘crorepati’ list with 5 candidates, but the BJP is not too far behind as three of the saffron party’s candidates have declared assets worth over the magical figure of a crore.

The tree BJP ‘crorepatis’ are: Pallab Lochan Das (Tezpur), Pradan Baruah (Lakhimpur), and Topon Kumar Gogoi (Jorhat).

Rangapara MLA Pallab Lochan Das has declared assets worth Rs.1,44,45,139.

Sitting Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, meanwhile, has declared assets worth Rs. 14307978.

The last BJP ‘crorepati’ on the list is power Minister Topon Kumar Gogoi, with assets worth Rs. 12597461.

The fourth BJP candidate who will contest the election is Rameshwar Teli, who isn’t faring quite shabbily either, having accrued total assets worth Rs. 43 crores.

Assam will head to the polls in three phases on 11, 18, and 23 April. Counting of votes will be held on 23 May.
