Guwahati: United Liberation Front of Axom (Independent) Commander-in-Chief Paresh Baruah's nephew Rupak Axom (Munna Baruah), who went missing in the jungles of Myanmar, has reportedly died. However, his uncle has said that Rupak is not dead yet and is simply "missing."

Rupak Axom had joined the militant outfit in 2018. His father, Bimal Baruah, is the brother of Paresh Baruah.

It needs to be mentioned that two mysterious deaths have been reported from the ULFA hideouts along the China-Myanmar border.

In 2012, Jahnabi Mahanta left her family to join the outfit but died after a few months. And now Rupam, who was ULFA chief Paresh Baruah's nephew, is also, dead.

According to reports, ULFA (I) cadres are still searching for Rupak, who mysteriously went missing from the thick jungles of Myanmar, where many militant camps are located.

Rupak's joining of the ULFA (I) came as a major surprise way back in 2018, and was covered extensively by media.

He was serving as a junior engineer and working as an apprentice in Digboi Refinery before joining ULFA (I) in November 2018.

Incidentally, he also went missing for a few days in 2018, without notifying the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) office.

When his family members lodged two complaints in Digboi and Chabua police stations, the police found out that he fled to join the outfit led by his uncle, Paresh Baruah.

It needs mention here that the ULFA (I) Chief was being repeatedly called to the negotiating table by the Assam Government after the signing of the BTR Accord with Bodo insurgents. Government interlocutor AB Mathur also expressed optimism that a peace accord would be signed very soon. However, the COVID-19 pandemic seems to have derailed the process.
