JORHAT: Parimita Das (30), a college lecturer, died in a tragic ferry accident yesterday when two ferries with at least 150 passengers on board from opposite directions collided in the Brahmaputra River.

The horrific accident took place on Wednesday around 4 pm at Nimatighat, Jorhat district of Assam.

Parimita's body was fished out from the river by the rescue workers.

She was immediately taken to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), unfortunately, the doctors declared her brought dead.

Parimita who was a Cotton University student was appointed as a college lecturer in Rangachahi College but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was taking her classes online.

Taking to media Parimita's mother said, "She was very excited to go back to college and looking forward to starting her classes after the declaration of the school, college reopenings."

Her mother even asked her not to go and to continue taking her classes online instead. But she went and never returned,” Parimita's mother further added.

According to reports before the tragic end of her life, Parimita had updated her WhatsApp status as – “Riniki Riniki”

‘Riniki Riniki’ is a line from the famous Assamese song "Majuli" from the latest album Pancham -2017 sung and composed by singer Nilotpal Bora.

This song is a humble attempt to stand with the people of Majuli who have never given up hope and to proclaim that ‘the bright rising sun will soon reach us.'

When Parimita was boarding the boat, her mother was standing at the ghat, seeing her and moving her gaze away from her, said her mother.

As per preliminary reports as many as 82 persons have survived the boat capsize accident meanwhile two missing and 8 persons are being treated at JMCH.
