TAMULPUR: With former Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary's name figuring among aspirants for the vacant Rajya Sabha that will go to polls on March 1, the former Bodoland People's Front (BPF) leader put the onus on the party steering committee’s court to offer him candidature or not.

The seat fell vacant after he resigned from the Upper House on November 21 last year to join the BJP from BPF just ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) election.

Talking to the press, Daimary said: "The BJP does not function like others. We have a steering committee to decide on such matters. I have just joined the BJP. Hence, my personal interests are not going to be counted. BJP will take a unanimous decision and that should be one for all."

"The Election Commission has fixed March 1 for the polls, and filing up of nominations is going to be from February 11 to February 18. Now which party is going to file nomination, only time will say," he added.

Asked about his role during the state assembly elections, Daimary said: "BJP's goal is to win more than 100 seats and I will work for the party as much as I can in this regard.”

During the BTC elections, though the BPF had emerged the single largest party, the BJP along with its allies (UPPL and GSP) formed the executive council.

Now it would be worth watching whether the BTC people choose a BPF candidate again or BJP is going to increase a seat of their own in the Parliament.
