Guwahati, September 8, 2019:

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday arrived in Guwahati to take part in the Northeastern Council (NEC). Speaking during the event, Shah reiterated that the people of Northeast need not worry as the BJP party shall not temper with the Article 371, which applies to several Northeastern States.

Shah also said that the people of the Northeast need not worry about the abrogation of Article 371. At the event, Shah also said that "development cannot come at the cost of indigenous people."

The Union Home Minister also informed that 30% of the NEC's budget will be used for developing the rural areas in the Northeast.

The abrogation of Article 370 by the Indian Government, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, has raised apprehensions in Northeastern states.

It may be mentioned here that this is Shah's first visit to Assam following the publication of the final Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC), on August 31. After the publication of the draft, many BJP leaders in the state have raised concerns over a large number of Hindus being left out of the NRC. Assam BJP President Ranjeet Dass has confirmed that the BJP leadership in the State will hold discussions with Shah on the NRC later in the afternoon today.

During his two-day visit, he will also attend a meeting of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance tomorrow. The NEC is the top advisory body for development in the northeast, and for facilitating effective coordination among the member states.
