Agartala, September 10, 2019:

Tripura police on Monday recovered 40,560 bottles of Phensedyl worth over Rs 22.5 lakh, from a godown in Tripura's Badharghat town.

Police have arrested the owner of the godown and the manager has also been detained. It may be mentioned Badharghat Assembly constituency in Tripura will undergo by-elections on September 23.

The cough syrup Phensedyl, which is a combination medicine used for the treatment of a dry cough, is often used as an addictive drug.

The problem of medication abuse in Tripura is serious because pharmaceuticals are more affordable and easily available at retail outlets.

They are often used as substitutes by drug users. The problem gets magnified when drug users begin to take them over a long period of time.

Distributors, wholesalers or retailers do not bring cough syrups legally into Tripura but smuggle them in trucks into the State under a fictitious name.
