GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah are likely to visit poll-bound Assam again for a third time within one month.

This will be Amit Shah’s fourth visit to the state since December 26.

According to reports, Amit Shah will visit to Batadrava in Nagaon district, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva on February 25. The last time he visited Assam, he paid a visit to the residence of Ananta Roy, the chief of Greater Coochbehar Peoples' Association (GCPA), Chirang district in Assam.

Modi will visit Bogibeel in Dibrugarh on February 22. He will also attend two public meetings in Majuli and Dhemaji’s Silapathar, cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. PM Modi is also likely to lay the foundation of a bridge over the Brahmaputra between Jorhat and Majuli.

Earlier, Modi visited in Sivasagar on January 25 and Dhekiajuli on February 7.

On his last visit, Modi virtually laid the foundation of two medical colleges at Biswanath and Charaideo in Assam from Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur districts. He also launched Asom Mala, a programme to upgrade state highways and major district roads.

Meanwhile, the Congress has alleged that the foundation laying and other official programmes were just pretexts only to make the campaign tours official.

“Assam had been reeling under devastating floods over the past five years. None of Modi or Shah had time to visit the state and take stock of the plight of the flood-affected people of the state. Now that the elections are around the corner, they are making frequent tours to the state,” said Congress state president Ripun Bora at Sivasagar yesterday.

Congress legislature party leader Debabrata Saikia also called Modi a “tourist PM” saying: “He loves tourism. He is a tourist PM. He travels around the world. It’s a different matter that even our neighbouring countries do not like us anymore. Besides, travelling helps him earn the travel allowances. His coming to Assam thrice in a month is nothing important. It makes no difference for us.”
