GUWAHATI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today once again won hearts on social media by promoting the prestigious Assamese 'gamusa' on Twitter, where he has over 66 million subscribers. However, some netizens were quick to point out that the traditionally woven garment carried too hefty a price tag.

Modi today shared a link to asomi.com where one can buy hand-crafted traditional items and informed that he has purchased a gamusa from the site.

"You have seen me wear the Gamusa very often. It is extremely comfortable. Today, I bought a Gamusa made by various self-help groups of Kakatipapung Development Block," the PM wrote in the caption, adding the hashtag "naarishakti."

However, some users on Twitter have alleged that Modi's promoting Assam's women weavers is an election gimmick ahead of the polls in the state.

"Before Bihar elections you did some drama about having tasty litti chokha, before Assam elections again you are doing some other drama, before UP elections you did demonetisation !!! Are you all about elections elections and elections only Modiji?," wrote one user.

There were others who took affront at the astronomical price of the garment (Rs. 1950).

"Modi ji is selling over priced Gamusa like he sells petrol/diesel/gas in India. Check other sites Sir," said a user, while another wrote, "2000 ? Itna to Levis aur wrangler bhi nhi loot rhe bhai."

Most, however, were all praise for the PM for giving some much needed push to save the traditional handloom weaving traditions.

"Thanks for setting the bar and highlighting our pride " Gamusa" ! Thankyou PM thankyou so much," said a user.

PM Modi on Monday took the first dose of Bharat Biotech's Covaxin at Delhi's AIIMS. At the time of the vaccination, the Prime Minister was also seen wearing a 'gamosa' (a scarf), which is regarded as a symbol of Assamese culture.
