GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address an election rally in Assam’s Tamulpur today to push the campaigning for the third phase of the Assam assembly elections.

On the other hand, BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma has been banned by the Election Commission of India from campaigning for 48 hours for threatening to send political rival Hagrama Mohilary to jail by using the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Voting for the third phase will take place on April 6 for a total of 40 constituencies.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and chief minister of Chattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel will attend a couple of meetings today in Barpeta and Bongaigaon districts to campaign for the party.

Meanwhile, in the case related to the ‘waylaid EVMs’ in Ratabari, the Election Commission has suspended two security officials.

The action has been taken against them for abandoning the stranded polling party and failing to ensure that they arrived safely at their destination.

On the basis of the special observer’s report on the incident, the poll panel decided to take action.

On Thursday, an EVM being carried in a private vehicle of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate was reported.
