GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the ‘Mahabahu-Brahmaputra’ and will virtually lay the foundation of two bridges in Assam – Dhubri-Phulbari and Jorhat-Majuli -- tomorrow.

Modi will also perform the bhumi pujan (ground breaking) for the construction of Jorhat-Majuli bridge via video conferencing in presence of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari.

 

The programme Mahabahu-Brahmaputra aims at providing seamless connectivity to the eastern parts of India, including various development activities for the people living along the Brahmaputra and the Barak.

The launch of Mahabahu-Brahmaputra will be marked by the inauguration of Ro-Pax vessel operations on the routes of Neamati-Majuli island, North Guwahati- Guwahati, and Dhubri-Hatsingimari, foundation laying of the inland water transport terminal at Jogighopa, and various tourist jetties on the Brahmaputra.

 

The Ro-Pax services will help to reduce the total distance of 420 km currently being travelled by motor vehicle to only 12 km. It will reduce travel time as well resulting in a substantial impact on the logistics of small-scale industries of the region.

 

Besides, a permanent inland water transport terminal will also be built at Jogighopa under the programme that will help reducing traffic on the Siliguri corridor towards Kolkata and Haldia.

Modi will further launch two e-portals to boost ease of doing business.
