Agartala, April 17, 2019:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has deferred the polling in the Lok Sabha elections in Tripura (East) constituency to April 23 due to the “law and order situation.” The ECI has said that there is no suitable situation to hold free and fair election. The election was supposed to take place on April 18.

The decision was made based on intelligence report about “miscreant elements” who are expected to be active in preventing the conduct of free and fare election.

Tripura Chief Electoral Officer Sriram Taranikanti on Tuesday night gave two reasons for deferment of elections in east constituency: firstly, to augment security deployment and patrolling, and secondly, to carry out confidence-building measures in five days till the new date of polling in the constituency.

The security is expected to be improved by the next date of polling, as announced by the ECI.

BJP candidate Rebati Mohan Tripura, sitting MP Jitendra Chowdhury of the CPI (M) and Pragya Dev Burman of the Congress are among those contesting from the East Tripura seat.
