GUWAHATI: Congress MP from Nagaon Pradyut Bordoloi has written to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to stay the auction order of Assam’s two closed paper mills in Cachar and Nagaon and proposed a few suggestions to revive the defunct mills.

"Even after the shut down of these two industries, starting from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to former CM, Minister of Industry including you being a responsible minister of Assam government have given the assurance of revival of these two industries, and that employees will get their 55-66 months of due salary." wrote Bordoloi in his letter.

Pradyut Bordoloi has put forward a few suggestions on how the government can revive the industries as well.

Bordoloi in his letter has taken the example of the Kerala government and how they have helped the Hindustan Newsprint Limited to save it from disinvestment and suggested the Assam government do the same with the two paper mills of Cachar and Nagaon.

Bordoloi also mentioned that old machines of the mills are occupying many bighas of the land and now the government can replace those with new and smaller and upgraded machines.

Keeping the economic development of Assam and employment factor in mind, Bordoloi has suggested setting up an Industrial Zone on the unused lands in the periphery of the paper mill by developing a good transport system for communication with four lanes as well.

The auction process for the state-run Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL) is underway and the liquidator has notified that an auction will be held on June 30 of 2021 from 10 am to 6 pm.

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in New Delhi in May 2019 ordered the liquidation of the two paper mills under Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited in Assam.

It is worth mentioning that the Assam government can also take part in the auction process.
